TOMMY PEOPLES: FIDDLER'S FANCY
Some years ago, the great Donegal fiddle player recorded a tape of tunes which was packaged with a book of transcriptions for the well-known Dublin music store Waltons. This recording, also featuring the bouzouki and guitar accompaniments of Manus Lunny, has now been re-released on CD. Peoples performs 50 tunes, playing each only once or twice through. Like on the original cassette, the instruments are completely separate on the left and right channels, so that one or the other can be isolated by adjusting the balance. Anything by Tommy Peoples is worth listening to, even if, like in this case, because there are few or no repetitions of the tunes, we are robbed of one of the great features of his playing, his variations.
