CIAN: THE ROLLING WAVE

This band, featuring the instrumental fireworks of Brian Duke on flute and Padraig Rynne on concertina, made a strong impression with their debut recording "Three Shouts from a Hill," and continue to impress with their instrumental prowess on this, their second album. Another good news is that Tim Murray has wisely confined his contribution to playing guitar, which he does very well, and let guest singer Margaret Moloney assume the vocal duties. Percussions and keyboards are added to the mix for a sound which is undeniably modern, but not overwhelmingly so for the most part, though a rendition of Lorena McKennitt's "Marakesh Night Market," however well executed and appropriately tinged with middle-eastern echoes, sounds pretty out of place--in fact, Duke and Rynne stay out of that one... Still, the latter's remarkable instrumental work makes this well worth getting.
