Patsy Touhey: uilleann pipes
A formidable collection of 36 tracks of historical recordings by the legendary Patsy Touhey (1865-1923), who came from Co. Galway and became a renowned piper and performer on the US vaudeville circuit. Until now, only few of his recordings had been heard, in part because Touhey recorded very little commercially and most of his recordings were unique copies and performances made to order for mail-order customers. A cassette with 22 of the recordings was available from the pipers' club, but 14 additional tracks are on the present CD. Although the fidelity of these old recordings is not always the best--most of them were on cylinders which degraded quickly with each playing--this collection does offer a truly amazing overview of the great piper's justly famous virtuosity.
