LAUREL MARTIN: THE GROVES
Laurel Martin: fiddle
Seamus Connolly: fiddle
Benedict Koehler: uilleann pipes
Kathleen Guilday, Hilari Farrington: harp
Mark Simos: guitar
Beth Sweeney: piano
Nathaniel Martin: double bass

A native of Massachusetts, fiddle player Laurel Martin was a student or renowned Clare fiddle player Seamus Connolly, and acknowledges the influence on her playing of yet another famous Clare fiddler, Paddy Canny. Surrounded by an all-star cast of New England musicians, including Connolly, Martin has produced a lovely recording where the influence of the East Clare and East Galway traditions is readily felt. Appropriately, the music has a gentle pace and flow. Especially appealing among the tracks recorded with guest musicians are the trios with the excellent piper Benedict Koehler and his wife Hilari Farrington on harp. Another highlight is Martin's interpretation of the stark slow air "Gol na mBan San Ar," with a mournful double bass drone throughout.  A very enjoyable listening experience. (June 2007)
