GARRY WALSH: UNCOVERED
Garry Walsh: flutes, whistles
Dave Hennessy: melodeon
Clare Fitzpatrick: fiddle
Johnny Neville: guitar
Colm Murphy: bodhran, percussion
Ilsa De Ziah: cello
A flute player raised in Manchester by parents from Co. Louth and Co. Cork, Garry Walsh has released his first album, recording tunes which came down through his family and which do not seem to have had much currency at all. In other words, it's almost like listening to an album of new compositions--and some of the tunes do have a sound and construction which sets them apart from typical traditional tunes. While this is a bit puzzling, the album actually contains some lovely melodies, and Walsh shows he is a capable player. The guitar accompaniments on some tracks are meant to have a modern feel and end up being a bit heavy for my tastes. On the other hand, there are some gorgeous unaccompanied duets with fiddle player Clare Fitzpatrick, as well as trio tracks with Dave Hennessy's melodeon added to the mix. Colm Murphy also participates on bodhran. An enjoyable and intriguing collection.
