VARIOUS: RANN NA FEIRSTE - CEOL AGUS AMHRAIN
A CD re-release of the 1973 LP of Donegal music originally recorded in the Rann na Feirste school the previous year. While the collection focuses more on the vocal tradition, it includes a few remarkable instrumental tracks by fiddle players Seamus and Donal O'Baoighill and whistle player Seosamh Mac Grianna. On the closing track for instance, the well-known reel "Drowsy Maggy" is performed in a very interesting setting with an unusual third part. But the bulk of the album is devoted to songs performed by the like of Sean O'Gallchoir, Aodh and Sean O'Duibheannaigh, and Nellie and Annie Ni Dhomhnaill, aunts of Micheal, Maighread, and Triona, of Skara Brae and Bothy Band fame. The quality of the recordings is as good as the performances are engaging. This is well worth re-discovering.
