AN GAOTH ADUAIDH - THE NORTH WIND
SOLO FLUTE PLAYING FROM THE IRISH TRADITION
Harry Bradley, Briain O'Domhnaill, Gary Hastings, Conor Byrne, Gerry O'Donnell, Marcas O'Murchu, Matt Molloy, Desi Wilkinson, Hammy Hamilton, Clodach Nic Ruairi, Paul O'Shaughnessy, Tara Bingham, Paul McGrattan: flute
The late Frankie Kennedy, a founding member of the Donegal band Altan, was not only a talented flute player but also a wonderful person, humorous, generous with his talents, and courageous in the face of the disease that took him away all too soon. This is a wonderful tribute to the man and his music, in the tunes played by a who's who of the Irish traditional flute playing world, as well as in the words with which the musicians evoke Kennedy in the liner notes and communicate their love and respect for him. In that respect, Paul O'Shaughnessy's story of Kennedy accompanying a piper with the car horn takes the prize, while Paul McGrattan's closing track is a masterpiece.
