John Kelly Sr.: concertina, fiddle
John Kelly Sr. came from the district of Rehy West in Co. Clare, and lived in Dublin for many years, managing his own shop on Capel Street. Kelly was a major figure in Dublin traditional music circles. He played with O'Riada's Ceoltoiri Cualainn and with the famous Castle Ceili Band, and was a pillar of the session scene. He was also a well-known teacher of traditional music, at the Willie Clancy Summer School in particular, where his students included yours truly back in 1979. This classic album was first released on the British label Topic/Free Reed in 1975. The CD includes 21 tracks from the original LP plus 11 tracks recorded at that time but not released until now. A thick booklet provides background information and fascinating reminiscing from the people involved in the original recording project.
