PETER HORAN & GERRY HARRINGTON: FORTUNE FAVOURS THE MERRY
Peter Horan: flute
Gerry Harrington: fiddle
Ollie Ross: piano
South Sligo flute player Peter Horan, now 79, is one of Ireland's cultural treasures and is known for his duet playing with the late great Fred Finn. Kerry fiddle player Gerry Harrington, well-known for his sweet, unencumbered playing style, has produced several landmark recordings in recent years, in particular with the group Smoky Chimney. Given the obvious generational and stylistic gap between the two, the match seems an improbable one at first. But it does work, probably because the focus is on Sligo music, and Harrington is almost playing a supporting role, as Horan blasts away with admirable energy. Adequate piano accompaniments by Ollie Ross.
