THE ENNIS CEILI BAND: TRADITIONAL DANCE MUSIC FROM COUNTY CLARE
The Ennis Ceili Band from Co. Clare was formed as a "junior" band in 1992 and coached by well-known Clare flute player Garry Shannon. Led by the excellent piano player Padraic O'Reilly, who has recorded a solo CD called "Down the Ivory Stairs," the band captured the All-Ireland senior title in 2001 and 2002. The opening track, recorded live during that last competition, conveys well the festive atmosphere and the sense of the band feeding on the energy of the audience. Comprising flutes, fiddles, concertina, accordion, banjo, piano and drums, the band plays very well indeed, and puts great effort in crafting interesting settings and variations for the tunes they perform. As one expects to find on such a recording, there are no less than three march tracks, including an untitled piece from the Grier collection.
